Between the more long term projects I am currently wading through and the siren call of the spring, I’ve been a tiny bit distracted lately. But I’m back with a vengeance and a lot of things to do.
Summer is coming, it has been nearly a year since my college graduation, and my lease is up soon. I’m working on an album cover for The Warbles, drinks with labels I drew are on the shelves and advertisements I’ve illustrated have run in Time Out New York and New York Magazine.
It’s a little nerve wracking to think about (I’ve been putting it off for months out of fear), but it’s become necessary that I organize my portfolio and pursue representation. What, you think Nick Dewar and Adrian Tomine were asked to draw New Yorker cover illustrations without representation? False. While I sort of regret not taking any business classes in college, frankly, I have a fairly short attention span and probably would have spent the whole time drawing little pictures in the margins of handout sheets. However, in the past almost-year I’ve probably learned more about managing myself as a freelancer by trial and error than I should have been comfortable with, in retrospect. It’s been a year. It’s time to get serious.
